A policy at Bega Valley Shire Council that said Higher Grade Pay was only payable after two weeks of higher duties has been corrected and backpay secured for affected members.

Members raised their concerns with their USU Organiser, Tim, who reviewed council’s policies and determined they were in breach of the NSW Local Government Award.

Tim notified council and was pleased to see them take the breach seriously.

All related policies were updated and brought in line with the Award. In addition, members who had been denied higher grade pay under the old policy received backpay.

This was a win for members who speak up and not just except the status quo. Well done Aaron Sweeney our new wages delegate.

This recent win at Bega Valley Shire Council shows what unionised workplaces can achieve.
