Canada Bay members have secured an important win after raising concerns about inconsistent payment of meal allowances for overtime worked on non-ordinary working days.
Some employees were receiving a meal allowance after four hours of overtime, while others were required to work longer before becoming eligible.
Members Raise Concerns
The USU took up the issue with Council and sought a review of Award provisions, payroll records and historical practices to ensure employees were being treated consistently.
Backpay and Better Conditions Protected
Following the review, Council confirmed it will continue paying meal allowances at the four-hour mark.
Importantly, the review identified workers who had missed out on payments. Affected employees will now receive backpay of up to six years, with adjustments processed automatically through payroll.
The review also identified some overpayments. In a practical outcome for employees, Council confirmed these amounts will not be recovered.
The USU acknowledges the constructive approach taken by Council throughout the review and the positive outcome achieved for members.
