The USU continues to strengthen its voice for lifeguards across New South Wales following strong engagement at the Coastal Safety Group (CSG) Annual Conference on 7 May 2026.
Bringing together coastal councils, industry leaders, and professional bodies such as the Australian Professional Ocean Lifeguard Association (APOLA), the conference provided a valuable opportunity to connect directly with those shaping coastal safety. A clear message emerged: council lifeguards play a critical and increasingly recognised role in keeping our beaches safe.
Advocating for Lifeguards and Local Government
The USU reinforced that local councils are on the frontline of coastal safety and must be backed by fair and sustainable State funding to maintain high-quality lifeguard services.
The Union also highlighted key wins for members, including the retention of in-house lifeguard services at Coffs Harbour City Council, demonstrating the impact of collective action in protecting public services.
Ensuring Lifeguards Are Counted
A major focus of the conference was the Coastal Insights project and the Data Analytics Hub (DAH). While designed to improve coastal risk management, concerns remain that the system does not fully capture the work of council lifeguards. This gap risks underestimating the scope of their contribution and the resources required to support it.
A Push for Transparency and Partnership
The USU is backing calls for stronger consultation and governance, ensuring councils and lifeguards have a genuine seat at the table. Key priorities include transparent decision-making, fair data-sharing, stronger oversight, and meaningful workforce engagement. There is also growing support for greater State Government involvement.
Looking Ahead
With strengthened ties to CSG and APOLA, the USU is well-positioned to drive continued progress. The Union remains focused on securing fair funding, improving representation in data and planning, strengthening governance, and championing the voices of lifeguards and local government workers.
The USU’s priorities remain clear:
- Securing increased and fair funding for council lifeguard services
- Improving the safety and wellbeing of lifeguards on the job
- Strengthening transparency and governance across the sector
- Championing the voices of lifeguards and local government workers
The USU will continue standing with members, advocating for the recognition, resources, and respect lifeguards deserve.
