This two-year Consent Award rollover at Broken Hill City Council delivers wage growth to members without any loss of conditions & gives us time to develop a new, fairer salary system with council.

Here’s what we negotiated:

  • A 4% wage increase from 1 July 2026, with a one-off bonus of $1500
  • A 3.5% wage increase from 1 July 2027, with another  one-off bonus of $1500
  • Without any loss of conditions to the previous Award.

Over 90% of members turned up to cast their vote at one of the 10 meetings our Riverina branch Organiser, Damo Welsh ran over two days at various council worksites and online.

All members voted in favour of the 2-year rollover, with 64% of members voting for 4% and 3.5% plus the two $1500 cash payments and 36% of members voting for 4% and 4% plus a one off $1500 payment.

The Award is now waiting to be ratified in the New South Wales Industrial Relations Commission, with the process hopefully being finished prior to July 2026.

Negotiations for the new Consent Award will commence in 2028 forthe next Broken Hill Consent Award, which realigns the negation period back up to the previous consent Awards.

We are glad that the USU and Council were able to reach an agreement that provides a good outcome for all parties, but the union would not have been able to achieve these results without the support of our members. You, the hard-working members of our union, and together we are stronger.

We thank members for their patience during this process.
