In August Essential Energy announced that approximately 400 corporate and support roles are proposed to be removed by the end of December 2026, as part of a program to reduce expenditure by around 15% over 18 months.

The announcement has created significant uncertainty for employees. The USU is demanding genuine consultation, transparency and answers before decisions are finalised.

USU Taking Action

The USU met with Essential Energy Management on Monday, 31 August to challenge the proposal and seek answers on:

  • Where the 400 role reduction will come from.
  • Vacancies, contractors and fixed-term employees.
  • Redeployment and “Mix and Match” arrangements.
  • Current workplace change consultations.
  • The future of apprentices and workforce numbers.
  • How Essential Energy will meet its obligations around genuine redundancies.

The USU has made it clear that consultation must occur before decisions are finalised or implemented.

Members Have a Voice

The USU held a paid one-hour hybrid member meeting on Tuesday, 1 September.

This will give members the opportunity to:

  • Hear the latest information following the Management meeting.
  • Ask questions and raise concerns.
  • Discuss the proposed changes collectively.
  • Speak openly with the Union without Management present.

Your job. Your future. Your Union.

The USU will continue to fight for proper consultation, transparency, and the best possible outcomes for members.

Stay informed. Stay united. Stay with your Union.
