Jetstar members have been engaged in ongoing protected industrial action at Sydney Domestic Airport, with the latest action being members waiving fees for things like excess baggage and seat changes! This action caught media attention and was a hit with customers, who have expressed support for our members in their ongoing enterprise bargaining negotiations with the company.
Members have also been visually showing their support by wearing campaign badges and wearing casual footwear that isn’t normally allowed as part of the airline’s strict uniform policy. These types of action are important to show solidarity with other members, but to also publicly embarrass the company, as it helps spread awareness of our members’ low wages and the need to improve their working conditions.
Members across our airlines have been inspired by our Jetstar members’ actions, with many at Virgin also discussing potential future protected industrial action, pending the outcome of upcoming EA bargaining meetings.
Airline employers have a long history of exploiting their employees with low wages and poor working conditions, but union members are pushing back to get a fair deal in this round of negotiations. As our airline members have taught us – stand strong and stay united – it’s the only way we win!
