Several months ago, USU member Tim Tarrant reached out to his local USU Organiser to discuss his future at work. While Tim remained committed to Council and passionate about his trade, he felt he needed a change of scenery and an opportunity to reinvigorate his working life as he approached the back end of his career.
Understanding the importance of retaining skilled and experienced workers, the USU Organiser held discussions with Tim’s managers to explore potential opportunities within Council. Whilst naturally disappointed to potentially lose an experienced team member, Tims managers were extremely understanding and assisted in the process to ensure Tim could transfer his extensive knowledge and expertise into a new team.
Through ongoing and constructive discussions with Council representatives, and a shared willingness to find a positive outcome, a transfer arrangement was negotiated that allowed Tim to move from the Koala St Workshop, into the “ETS” team. The process demonstrated what can be achieved when USU members work collaboratively to address workplace concerns and identify practical solutions.
Tim reports that he is very happy in his new role and has discovered a renewed sense of purpose in his work. One of the most rewarding aspects of the transfer has been the opportunity to mentor and support the next generation of workers.
“I’ve really enjoyed passing on my skills and knowledge to the apprentices,” Tim said. “At the same time, they’re helping me with computers and things like that as well, so it’s been great.”
Tim’s story serves as a reminder that career satisfaction is not always about changing employers. Sometimes, a change within an organisation can provide new challenges, new opportunities and renewed enthusiasm for the job.
