Every edition of our journal celebrates another major win for our members. This edition is no different.

At our Annual Conference, NSW Premier Chris Minns announced the NSW government would be putting forward legislation securing same job, same pay provisions covering NSW council workers on labour hire contracts.

It was a proud moment for myself as President of our great union as I know how strongly our union, led by General Secretary Graeme Kelly, has been campaigning for this. The legislation will protect jobs, wages and conditions by ensuring contractors pay the same as councils.

It was such a highlight of a really great conference. Graeme has mentioned the energy he felt at conference – I can assure you I felt it too – our wonderful delegates were totally engaged at all sessions with 85.71% of those who provided feedback saying “the information was presented in a way that encouraged me to take on bigger challenges in my workplace” – this is a great indication of the success of conference.

It is all about encouraging our delegates to go back to their workplaces better informed and better armed to fight the good fight!

This year I was also able to attend some of the Women’s Conference and once again our amazing Women’s Committee and new Women’s Officer Danielle Kelly did an amazing job with one member commenting:

“Each session was great! such a wide range of topics – the panels were amazing! Food was great! Exceptional speakers. Loved it!”

The panel sessions were particularly with participants and I was not surprised to see the “Women in Leadership” panel scoring the top gong for the most popular session!

Two great conferences! I congratulate the executive, delegates and USU staff who made it possible – see you next year!

In union
