Members, we have had a turbo charged start to 2026. Before I talk about the Local Government Award vote coming up I would like to acknowledge the work of the USU Executive and staff during my extended leave in 2025. In particular President Sharon Sewell and the managers who fulfilled the role of General Secretary and continued to lead our union forward – Stephen Hughes, Steve Donley, Gary Vann, Daniel Papps and Sandie Morthen.
This has been a busy start to the year but we were ready! This journal covers many of the main campaigns we have been leading. Early in the year we met with our national union where a resolution was passed declaring that ongoing interest rate rises are untenable for working Australians. Following the outbreak of the war in the middle east we surveyed our members about how we could help in the face of increased fuel costs and shortages. Our proposed Splinter Award seeks provision for a 4 day week, increased WFH and increased fuel reimbursements.
This is on top of other important campaigns such as our STOP ABUSE AT WORK campaign. Our journal outlines the range of significant wins for our members across all of our sectors.
Your pay and conditions are being negotiated right now and local government members will soon have the opportunity to vote on your pay and conditions for the next 3 years.
Only Union Members have a say. Stand up and make your voice heard. If you know a colleague who is not a member encourage them to join the USU today!
The award offer at a glance:
