Recently, United Services Union (USU) officials Luke Hutchinson and Zac Sheather recently met with newly appointed General Manager Murray Wood, and Group Leader Organisational Development, Murray Watson at Coffs Harbour City Council in what proved to be a productive and positive discussion focused on further strengthening the working relationship between both parties.
The meeting was characterised by open dialogue, mutual respect, and a shared commitment to improving outcomes for employees and Union members across the Organisation. Both parties acknowledged the importance of collaboration in addressing workplace challenges and ensuring that staff and leaders are supported, heard, and valued.
USU representatives welcomed the opportunity to engage directly with Council management and discuss matters of shared interest. The discussion provided a constructive forum to raise ideas, clarify expectations, and explore practical ways to continue working together in the best interests of employees and the community that they work for. Importantly, the tone of the meeting reflected a genuine willingness from all participants to listen and engage in good faith.
Council management also demonstrated a clear commitment to maintaining transparent and respectful communication with the Union by recognising the important role the USU plays in representing employees. Management reaffirmed the value of partnership when it comes to building a safe, fair, and productive workplace.
Throughout the meeting, both parties highlighted the benefits that flow from a strong, collaborative relationship and acknowledged that when management and the Union work together, it creates an environment where issues can be constructively resolved early, improvements can be implemented effectively, and employees can feel confident that their voices are being heard at all levels.
The meeting concluded on a positive note, with agreement to continue regular engagement and to build on the foundations discussed.
