Did You Know? Casual Workers Are Entitled to Performance Assessments under the Local Government (State) Award.
Many workers assume that casual employees miss out on annual assessments. However, if you are employed on a regular and systematic basis, you may be entitled to performance reviews that impact your progression through the salary system.
Missed Assessments to $35,000 in Backpay
Earlier this year, Martine discovered she had never undergone an annual assessment, despite working at Council on a regular and systematic basis. As a result, she remained at the bottom of the salary system for her role.
After learning of her entitlement, Martine contacted the USU. With the Union’s support, she raised the matter with Council and met with management to propose a fair resolution, seeking recognition of her service and appropriate remuneration.
To Council’s credit, Randwick City Council acknowledged the oversight and agreed to rectify it without dispute. Martine received approximately $30,000–$35,000 in backpay, plus superannuation on the unpaid wages.
This outcome demonstrates the importance of knowing your rights and having the Union by your side. It also serves as a reminder to all members: if something doesn’t seem right, speak up.
If you believe you may have missed out on an assessment, contact the USU for advice and support.
