Waverley Council staff were facing the prospect of waiting more than 12 months for their next annual assessment and the pay increase that comes with it. For some workers, the proposed changes would have meant a direct financial loss.
In mid-2025, Council proposed replacing anniversary-based assessments with a single annual review date for all staff. While the change aimed to streamline processes, it would have advantaged some employees by bringing their assessments forward, while financially disadvantaging others, forcing them to wait more than 12 months for their next salary progression.
Recognising the impact on members, depa lodged a dispute in the Industrial Relations Commission (IRC). The USU, depa, and the Local Government Engineers Association (LGEA) united to challenge the proposal, arguing that no worker should be financially disadvantaged.
Through conciliation, the unions secured a fair and equitable outcome.
Under the new arrangement:
- All staff will receive an automatic step increase on their anniversary date, ensuring no member is left waiting or out of pocket.
- High-performing employees can receive an additional step increase during the annual assessment, creating the opportunity for even greater earnings.
This means fair pay is protected and for some members, there is now the potential to earn more than they could before.
