The USU community has once again come together to support Lester and his family, demonstrating the compassion and solidarity that define our union.

Following the success of the initial fundraiser, a second raffle was held, bringing the total funds raised over $11,000 for Lester’s loved ones.

Congratulations to Thao Tran, winner of the framed signed jersey in the second raffle. Her support, along with that of many others, reflects the generosity of USU members and staff.

USU staff are committed to honouring Lester’s memory in meaningful and lasting ways.

A proposal has been put forward to establish a calm space in the Sydney office; a dedicated area where staff can pause, reflect, and gather their thoughts. The proposal also includes installing a memorial plaque commemorating Lester, a fitting tribute to his character and the impact he had on those around him.

The Lester Lualua Award

In addition, staff have proposed the introduction of the Lester Lualua Award (Comrade Award). This annual recognition would celebrate exceptional service and support among union staff, honouring those who go above and beyond to mentor and uplift their colleagues; values Lester embodied throughout his career.

These initiatives ensure that Lester’s legacy of kindness, solidarity, and support will continue to inspire the USU for years to come.
