USU Organiser Greg Wellington met with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander members at Randwick Council on 13 November, beginning an important discussion about improving Indigenous representation and access to council roles.

A Community with Deep Local Roots

With a significant Aboriginal community in the area, particularly La Perouse, USU members highlighted the need for better pathways into council employment and a stronger presence of Indigenous staff across the organisation.

The meeting was productive and also welcomed a new USU member. Members outlined opportunities for change and expressed support for next steps.

There is clear potential to improve how Randwick engages with and reflects its local Indigenous community. This meeting marks a strong beginning, and the USU will continue supporting members as they work to make their council a more inclusive and representative workplace.

Taking the Issue to the General Manager

Greg is now arranging a meeting with the General Manager, ensuring union members can put their ideas and experiences directly to decision-makers.

Community Voices Engaged

Member Brendan Simms has involved local Elder Aunty Barbara Simms, who has expressed interest in attending the forthcoming discussions to strengthening the connection between Council and community.
