In a first-of-its-kind decision, the Fair Work Commission has directed AGL, owners of both coal and gas fired generators in the NEM, to assist workers who will be impacted by the closure of the Torrens Island power station in South Australia.

As a result of the decision, AGL will be required to either arrange or fund career planning and financial advice and make further contributions to the cost of any training.  Additionally, AGL will set aside jobs for impacted workers at another of its power stations in the same area

The decision of the FWC arrives on the back of years of behind the scenes work by your Union and its sister Union in the ASU; it was the USU and the ASU that were instrumental in establishing the legislation that ultimately delivered these job transition outcomes for workers at Torrens Island.

As the grid undergoes change, members can be assured that your Union will continue to advocate for all workers impacted by power station closures.

Lastly, as we approach the end of the year, your Energy Branch and organisers want to wish all of our members a happy and safe Christmas and New Year.  When we kick off in the new year, members can look forward to hearing and seeing more about our campaigns across the electrical power industry.
