This year the USU New Gen Committee is presenting two special awards. The Apprentice/Trainee of the Year and Mentor of the Year. 

We are asking you to nominate fellow USU members in your workplaces for these awards. We are excited to have you join us in celebrating the future of our union. 

Selection Criteria:

Apprentice/Trainee of the Year 2020

  • The nominator, and nominee are financial USU members, please provide membership numbers.
  • The nominee is undertaking a recognised qualification by a Registered Training Organisation (RTO) please provide a copy of the RTO course details.
  • The nominee is respected by peers and their fellow union members – please complete the nominators, and provide two other supporting statements.

Mentor of the Year 2020

  • The nominator, and nominee are financial USU members, please provide membership numbers.
  • The nominee has actively mentored workers, please provide examples if available demonstrating mentoring in the workplace.
  • The nominee is respected by their peers and their fellow union members – please complete the nominator’s statement, and provide another supporting statement.

Our great winners from 2019

Jock Fraser, Apprentice Parks and Gardens member from Mid Coast Council has been awarded the 2019 USU New Gen Committee Apprentice / Trainee of the Year.

Jock has already completed several modules of Certificate III in Parks and Gardens and is receiving great results in these studies.

Information gathered by his nominators truly support Jock being a worthy recipient with the following direct quotes from the nomination

“Jock has shown ongoing initiative, leadership and dedication. He has the respect of his peers and shows drive and creativity in all tasks asked of him.”

“Jock is very good at thinking ahead and predicting what will happen next. This improves the flow of work and increases productivity.”

“Jock had a keen interest in horticulture and a strong willingness to learn all aspects of the trade.”

On behalf of the New Gen Committee, the USU certainly congratulates Jock as a very worthy recipient of this prestigious Award. The Award was presented to Jock at the Mid Coast Council Picnic Day on Friday 18th October 2019 by USU New Gen Committee Coordinator, Luke Hutchinson.

We also recognise the positive influences of genuine mentors in the workplace. 

The 2019 USU New Gen Committee Mentor of the Year was awarded to Robert Humphries, Treatment Operations Coordinator – Waste Water, from Dubbo Regional Council.

While undertaking his key role in Council, Robert has continually mentored and developed apprentices over the years. Information gathered by his nominators truly support Robert being a worthy recipient with the following direct quotes from the nomination:

“He (Rob) had taught me so much in this job.”

“Rob is a fair honest bloke who shares information for everyone to grow and learn who listens to everyone’s ideas.”

“Rob leads by example on tough jobs by getting in and working side by side with his employees, especially on jobs no one wants to do, eg Cleaning out the inside of Wet Wells.”
