So much has happened over the past few years many of us feel our heads are spinning! How could it be April already?
In this ever-changing world it can be hard to keep up – that’s why your USU Executive made the decision to move our journal online. It means we can deliver news to you faster and more often.
United magazine will now be delivered to your inbox six times a year!
Many members expressed concern over the use of plastic wrap and the waste of paper as well as the ever-increasing cost of postage. We listened and have delivered. We will continue to upgrade and personalise our news as we develop our member portal. So stay tuned because things are getting better and better. If you have a news story or a comment or suggestion we want to hear from you. Email us here.
Our journal is not the only thing moving at a faster pace. Already in 2024 we have had some great wins and some big battles while increasing our membership and our strength alongside you at work.
In the federal sphere we have seen wins on superannuation during maternity leave as well as the significant “Closing the Loopholes” IR legislation passed in the Parliament.
Thursday’s announcement by the Albanese federal government that a Senate Inquiry into sustainable local government jobs, services and funding will be held is a great victory for members and the union. This is a significant win for the industry, our union and our members and one I am very proud of. Read more here.
These big wins are important but nothing is achieved without each and every one of you. It is YOU that makes the difference – and your mate standing alongside you, so if they are not a member why not have a word and tell them about some of the great benefits of USU membership. If you sign them up you can collect $50 in our Sign Up a Mate scheme.
That’s why I love celebrating members like Habib Younis pictured above at his retirement function earlier in the year. Members like Habib are the backbone of our union – 44 years a USU member. As someone who has mentored many young workers, Habib’s influence will be felt out at Parramatta Council for decades to come.
So welcome to our new journal format and to another great year with the United Services Union – always by your side.
