On 12 November USU General Secretary Graeme Kelly was part of a live panel discussion on Weekend Sunrise, along with Blacktown Mayor Steve Bali and Liberal MP George Christensen. Graeme highlighted the key positions of the union on the issue. Drugs and alcohol are a work safety issue, but how we approach them is the important thing. Substance abuse is often the result of illness, and it is essential that councils and other employers approach the issue in a sensitive, supportive way. If you simply sack someone for one mistake, it can cause untold harm to them. By providing counselling and other support, you can help them address the problem and return to being a healthy, productive member of the workforce.
