Shock and frustration are growing among Liverpool City Council workers and the local community after it was revealed asbestos-contaminated turf underlay was dumped at Pye Hill Reserve and neither staff nor residents were told.

Council has admitted it knew about the contamination since 26 August, yet could not confirm whether work was stopped or if all affected workers and community members were informed.

It was USU delegates who raised the alarm last week, prompting management to finally address the issue at a Work Health and Safety meeting. Since then, SafeWork NSW and the EPA have stepped in to investigate how long workers and potentially the public were exposed, and why the truth was delayed.

The matter is now before the Industrial Relations Commission this Friday, where the USU will continue demanding transparency and accountability from Council.

Your safety isn’t optional. Your right to know isn’t negotiable.
