As we wrap up another great year many members would know that I recently had surgery on my knee so I am recuperating at home.

It is a slow process but one that will mean I will be back in full force in 2025 – hopefully pain free.

Having a knee replacement is a bit like a union campaign. A bit daunting at first but with the help of a great team of professionals, as well as support from those around you, you come back stronger than ever.

That phrase describes the year we have had perfectly.

We are stronger than ever. Not only has our great union grown in numbers – and in strength – we have also had considerable victories for our members.

A few highlights have been the win for funding of 1,300 new trainees/apprentices in local government following a three year campaign by the union and our members.

Another massive win is the announcement for funds to stop outsourcing local waste jobs in Lismore. A 13 month campaign by the union and our members has reaped rewards with the Minister for Local Government Ron Hoenig announcing the funding last week. This is fantastic victory and certainly our members face a much brighter Christmas this year than they did last year. They now have job security, with wages and conditions protected.

We launched our new member portal, delivering members greater communication opportunities with the union.

We held a successful conference where we recognised great members through various awards and presentations. A personal highlight for me was presenting former President Glen McAtear with Life Membership (pictured above).

We have had numerous wins at the workplace ranging from local victories to nationwide wins like the right to disconnect and increased workplace rights.

Members should be proud of their achievements in 2024 – I know I am.

On a final note I wish USU General Secretary Graeme Kelly well as he undertakes some well-earned extended leave. Having crisscrossed the state, the country and even the globe on behalf of union members it is good to see that Graeme will get the opportunity to enjoy some personal time.

I look forward to hearing all about his adventures when he returns. I know that the whole union wishes him and his wife Sally safe travels.

I wish all members and their families a Merry Christmas and a safe and happy 2025!
