This week we lost one of our own. Executive member Jim O’Malley.

Anyone who met Jim would know what a devastating loss this is to his family and friends as well as his USU family.

In addition to being a true unionist, Jim was also a great friend and a vital member of the USU state Executive, representing the union at a Branch level and national conference.

You can read more about Jim’s outstanding contribution to the USU here.

It is a timely reminder of the vital role people like Jim make to the success of our great union.

It is also an opportunity to reflect on the important role your USU Executive plays.

The members of your Executive are elected every four years. Executive members contribute in an honorary capacity to ensure the voice of rank and file members like yourself are heard and have a say in how our union faces the challenges of a modern society in an ever-changing world.

Your Executive sacrifices time with family to serve the members of the USU and they should be honoured for their contribution.

I am enormously proud of the members of our Executive and it is a great honour to work with them to make sure we are stronger now and into the future.

Serving on the USU Executive has also given me the opportunity to meet Jim and that is the greatest honour of all.
