USU members at a Sydney Metropolitan Council preschool recently uncovered a long-standing issue: they weren’t being paid for overtime hours worked beyond their ordinary shifts.
At first, the Council refused to acknowledge the additional hours as overtime. But members stood strong, backed by the constant advocacy of their Union. Together, we secured more than $100,000 in backpay for seven members, with more potentially to come.
This outcome doesn’t just fix the past, it changes the future. Council has now agreed to review its processes and update its HR/payroll systems so that additional hours can be properly recorded and paid moving forward.
For members, this means years of frustration have finally been addressed. It also means their work is being properly recognised and compensated.
This is a massive win for our preschool teachers!
