Receiving six nominations, which is twice the required number, Ariana Johnson’s nomination for Apprentice/Trainee of the Year was in recognition of her exceptional dedication to her studies, work as an Environmental Health Officer and unionism.
Ariana was a Cadet Environmental Health Officer at Shoalhaven City Council until earlier this year, when she began her current role at Kiama Municipal Council as an Environmental Health Officer.
Since 2021, Ariana has been studying a Bachelor of Science (Environmental Health) while working full time.
Consistently achieving high grades, Ariana made the Dean’s merit list in 2023 and is on track to finish a 6 year part time degree in just 5 years.
As a Cadet at Shoalhaven City Council, Ariana was managing her own district – a significant jump in responsibility which started not long after she started her Cadetship.
In addition to tertiary studies and full time work, Ariana is a highly dedicated young union member who has advocated effectively for the rights of trainees and apprentices across council. To achieve this, Ariana formed part of the working group that ensured these rights were clearly documented in the workplace and learning procedure.
In addition, Ariana meets with other trainees and cadets at council to make sure they are treated equally and fairly. If inequalities are raised, Ariana will address them on their behalf. Ariana also attends the consultative committee as a union representative.
Ariana’s nominations were exceptionally strong, but we would like to conclude with one quote from one of her nominees:
Ariana has managed to perform all these duties while successfully pursuing her Bachelor of Science in Environmental Health. She has balanced university studies, examinations, and on-campus commitments with her professional responsibilities, showcasing exceptional time management and dedication. Her outstanding performance has been formally recognised through the prestigious 2024 Environmental Health Student Award.
Congratulations Ariana!
