At this year’s Women’s Conference dinner, USU members came together to support something truly special. Through an initiative of the USU Women’s Committee, we collected and donated formal clothing and funds to The Formal Project  https://www.facebook.com/p/The-Formal-Project-Inc-100076218938398/; an organisation ensuring young people aren’t excluded from milestone events like their school formal because of cost.

More Than Clothes

The Formal Project is about more than outfits. They provide suits, dresses, shoes and accessories through a free boutique, but also help with interview and work attire, and create volunteer and work experience opportunities. Most importantly, they do it with dignity, respect and care, so that every student feels included and valued.

A Moving Moment

On the night, Sam Oak’s, the founder of The Formal Project accepted racks of donated outfits and a cheque for $5000. Seeing those clothes ready to be worn by young people who might otherwise have missed out was a powerful reminder of the difference solidarity can make.

Why It Matters

A school formal may only last one night, but for the students who walk through those doors, it’s about belonging, confidence and being recognised for who they are.

Thank You, Members

The USU thanks every member who donated, and acknowledges the leadership of the Women’s Committee for making this project a reality.
