Did you know that the NSW government has recently proposed a cut of 18% or $5.2 million off the current budget towards all NSW public libraries. Please sign our petition calling on the issue to be debated on the floor of NSW Parliament. Share it with all your contacts!
Funding at an all time low
NSW currently contributes the lowest budgetary amount of 7.8% nationally, and this cut effectively means that funding to public libraries is at the lowest level since 1999.
These cuts directly affect the grant funds accessible to all libraries, which impacts most on disadvantaged communities with grant funding going directly to provide community services, resources, and programs.
Communities lose out
Cutting the funding creates inequality and damages communities every step down the line. While there is no direct threat to jobs as a result of this action there could be implications as a result of loss of funding and as to how each council area deals with this issue.
The Leader of the Opposition Luke Foley has promised to increase funding to libraries by $50 million, restoring funding to protect local communities.
