The USU has met with representatives from the NSW Environment Protection Authority to discuss ongoing concerns about the use of glyphosate based herbicides like Roundup by our members at Council.
The NSW Environment Protection Authority is not responsible for licensing the use of glyphosate based products in Australia. They are however responsible for some enforcement measures associated with inappropriate use of herbicides. This includes the spraying of glyphosate based products inconsistent with label instructions.
We ask all members to make sure that their Council is spraying glyphosate based products in accordance with label instructions and that your Council has undertaken the proper risk assessments on the use of these types of products.
If you are concerned that your Council may not be doing this, contact you Union Organiser or Local Delegate immediately.
What’s next?
The Union continues to push for parliamentary inquiries into glyphosate based products at both the State and Federal level and we are seeking a meeting with the body responsible for licensing the use of glyphosate based products in Australia the Australian Pesticides and Veterinary Medicines Authority.
Further updates will be provided after that meeting.
