David Kennedy proudly commemorated his remarkable 45-year membership with the United Services Union (USU).

His journey began right after he completed his schooling when he took his first job at the Richmond Tweed Regional Library. It was during that initial week of employment that he recognized the importance of solidarity and promptly joined the union, setting the stage for decades of involvement.

Throughout his extensive career at the library, David embraced various roles that showcased his dedication and versatility. He provided exceptional customer service, ensuring that visitors felt welcome and valued. As a mobile library driver, he took on the responsibility of bringing literature to communities, enhancing access to resources for those who might otherwise be overlooked. Additionally, as the Inter Library Loans Officer, he played a crucial role in facilitating the sharing of materials and information across libraries, enriching the network of resources available to patrons.

David’s commitment extended beyond his professional duties; he was an active participant in numerous USU campaigns. He tirelessly advocated for library staff, fighting for essential issues such as back pay, ensuring that employees received the compensation they deserved. He also rallied support for the “Get Onboard to Your New Award” campaign, which aimed to educate members about their rights and entitlements. Furthermore, he championed the initiative to secure a fortnightly rostered day off for all library staff, recognizing the importance of work-life balance in maintaining a healthy and productive workforce. Through his efforts, David has left a lasting impact on both the library community and the union, embodying the spirit of advocacy and dedication.
