The United Services Union welcomes news of the NSW Government’s backflip on Mike Baird’s politically motivated amalgamation process that has decimated democratically elected councils.
Premier Berejiklian must immediately announce plebiscites of all forcibly amalgamated councils to determine if local communities support de-amalgamation that will restore local democracy.
It seems democracy is suddenly an issue for the Premier.
In this SMH article Premier Berejiklian says: “In all good conscience I could not have allowed communities to elect new representatives then to have that potentially overturned in a month, two months … at an in-determined time into the future.”
Hmmm … isn’t that what they did when they sacked elected councils and installed unelected administrators in May 2016?
“There’s no doubt the implementation could have been better”? you can say that again Premier.
Now it’s time to restore stability and democracy!
