Despite the temperature almost reaching 40 degrees almost 400 USU members turned out for the USU AGM on the 27th November. The meeting was held at the Blacktown International Sports Park.
The first guest speaker was Jayden Cummins who spoke on behalf of the NSW Organ and Tissue Donation Service. Jayden shared his story of one week where he went from a healthy, single dad who had the flu to facing death unless he received a heart transplant.
Jayden shared a moving story of waking up each morning hopeful of receiving a donor heart whilst also having immense guilt that someone else would have to die so that he could live.
The number of organs donated is astonishingly low and any one who would like to register to donate can do so here: https://www.donatelife.gov.au/register-donor-today . Its important to also discuss your decision with your family.
Speakers from Australian Mutual Bank and Union Shopper also spoke. USU Organiser Sandie Morthen gave an industrial update on the previous 12 months which included adoption of the Blacktown City Council Enterprise Agreement which provided good wage increases without sacrificing conditions.
The meeting finished up with the election of the 2025 delegate team. 36 delegates were elected with 7 new delegates joining the experienced and effective team.
