The USU community was deeply saddened by the unexpected passing of Michael Ainsworth in early 2024. Michael served at Fairfield City Council from 1979 right through to this year.

For many of those decades, Michael was an active USU delegate, standing up for fairness and supporting his fellow workers. Even after stepping down as a delegate in 2014, Michael remained a member and a trusted union contact, often assisting members with disciplinary and grievance matters.
Michael was proud of his service to both the USU and the Fairfield community. He was known as someone you could rely on and a devoted family man.
The USU was honoured to receive an invitation from his family to attend the recent unveiling of a memorial bench dedicated to him, located at the International Memorial on The Crescent in Fairfield. This site holds special meaning as the memorial’s refurbishment was one of the final projects Michael worked on.
Michael’s contribution to Fairfield, and to the lives of countless coworkers and union members, won’t be forgotten. We thank his family for including us in this moment of remembrance.
