Geoff completed his School Certificate at Narromine High School in 1981 and worked in various jobs, including as a farmhand, brickie’s laborer, and carpet layer, before joining Narromine Shire Council on 6 September 1984 as an Apprentice Plant Operator.

He began his journey with the Council on the garbage truck and also as a street sweeper.  Geoff says back then you swept the streets by hand and recalls he and another young apprentice were given this task in their ‘spare time’.

After completing his apprenticeship in 1988, Geoff stayed with the Shire, taking on various roles.

He worked as a laborer in a construction crew, concreting and installing kerb and gutters. He also operated a backhoe, installed water mains, and later moved on to driving a roller and then a loader at a Council quarry.

As the Council expanded its operations and purchased gravel trucks, Geoff moved on to driving a bogie tipper. With his growing qualifications and experience, he later moved on to driving a truck and dog combination then a semi-trailer gravel truck.  In 2019, Council purchased a second trailer for the semi and Geoff became the Council’s first Road Train Operator, a role he continues to fulfill today.

After 40 years of service, Geoff’s long tenure reflects the strong connection he has with Narromine Shire Council and his dedication to his work. “It’s not a bad place to work”
