The USU/ASU met with Qantas management for our second meeting to continue consultation about the expressions of interest and redundancies affecting airport and lounge staff on Monday, 17 August 2020.
Management provided us with an update on the results of the EOIs for each port. The results differ between different ports and different workgroups. In some work groups there are more people who would prefer a redundancy than redundancies available. In other groups, more people want to stay with Qantas than want to leave. This means we cannot take a one size fits all approach.
The USU/ASU is working with Qantas to find a way forward that is fair to all employees. We are exploring options for temporary part-time employment, special leave without pay and job swaps wherever possible.
We are also exploring the best way to decided who is made redundant where there are more volunteers than the company needs.
Qantas has also promised to provide us with data about their operations, so we can understand the impact of the proposed redundancies on the business into the future, we had hoped to have another meeting on the 19th August but unfortunately management could not get the information we needed to us by that date.
Consultations will continue with a meeting on Friday, 21 August 2020.
