An Early Childhood Educator from Blacktown City Council reflects on 40 years of care, connection and union solidarity.

A long-time educator and proud union member, Hayley Stannard, was recently recognised for 40 years of continuous membership. She is a dedicated Early Childhood Educator who joined the union in 1985, when Council took over the community childcare service she worked for.

Back then, it was the Municipal Employees Union. Today, it’s the United Services Union, but as she puts it, “the mission hasn’t changed. Fair wages, better leave and safer conditions for Early Childhood Educators simply wouldn’t exist without that collective push.”

Hayley has seen the sector change dramatically, from handwritten daily reports to digital apps, and from basic staffing to today’s tight ratios and quality ratings. Through it all, she’s stayed committed to her work, her team, and her union.

She’s now caring for second-generation families, with children she once looked after returning as parents. She’s also maintained friendships with co-workers for over 40 years and holds a deep connection to the city. Her grandfather once served as Mayor of Blacktown.

“I’ve always loved working with children, from babysitting as a teen to now, it’s what I was meant to do and I’m not done yet. I’ll keep showing up, giving my best and being proudly union. The support we give each other matters.”

To mark the milestone, the USU presented her with a certificate of appreciation. A small gesture to honour a wonderful career.
