There should be no politics in flood relief! We will be fighting for a fair go for all.

In positive news the Prime Minister finally declared a National Disaster in the Northern Rivers – triggering a further payment of the Disaster Recovery Payment Scheme of $2000 for adults and $800 for children.

But there is a catch. You need to live in National Party LGAs Lismore, Richmond Valley and Clarence Valley to get the extra payment.

First payment for all

All Northern Rivers Councils received the Disaster Recovery Payment Scheme of $1000 for adults and $400 for children.

However Ballina, Byron, Tweed and Kyogle councils – sitting in non Coalition electorates – will not at this stage get the second recovery payment.

This is just not on!

This is a disgraceful display of Party Politics at a time when all Australians should be working together regardless of how they vote.

We call on the Prime Minister to treat all victims of the catastrophic floods in the Northern Rivers region fairly and equally.

The photos above show how badly affected Tweed Shire is. Why are these people second class citizens?

“We will be fighting to make the federal government listen to the people of Australia and pay the flood victims equally,” said USU General Secretary Graeme Kelly OAM. “The Prime Minister’s response to the floods are very reminiscent of his response to the 2020 bushfires. Too little, too late.”

“But to treat Australians differently based on how they vote is hitting a new low,” said Graeme.
