Hard work did not pay off for one apprentice … until the USU stepped in!
A member from Newcastle City Council was handed a cessation of apprenticeship letter, effectively terminating his employment, because he knuckled down and completed his Certificate III in Civil Construction – Plant Operations, 7 months early.
Council decided to reward his efforts by giving him 3 weeks’ notice and attempting to exit him from the organisation.
The USU has fought hard to get a significant number of apprenticeships and traineeships, funded by the Federal Government, and Council did not want to support this young apprentice with “on the job” only training, until his agreed 3 year apprenticeship was up.
With the help and support of the Union, he has now been given a 7 month temporary contract so he can develop his skills and get additional experience, at post apprenticeship wages. We wish our member all the best in finding long term employment in your chosen field.
