One-off payment principles

  • Payment is limited to employees on NSW Health payroll – this excludes staff who are employed by external agencies.
    • Employees of NSW Health Agencies (including Ministry of Health) under NSW Awards are eligible.
    • Visiting Medical Officers are
    • Certain employees of third schedule organisations are
    • Junior Medical Officer locums and agency nurses are generally on NSW Health payroll, so are eligible.
    • Senior Executive Service and Health Executive staff are not
  • To be eligible, employees must have been employed on or before 1 April 2022; and remain employed on or after 1 July 2022.
  • Eligible full-time employees will receive:
    • One total payment of $3000, which includes superannuation and is subject to income tax.
  • Eligible part-time and casual employees will receive:
    • One total payment being a pro rata amount, including superannuation and subject to income tax.
    • Calculated on the average ordinary hours worked over the last 12 months (subject to a minimum threshold payment).
  • Eligible part-time or casual staff, and staff that have taken a period of unpaid leave will receive a minimum payment of $300, which includes superannuation and is subject to income tax; if their pro rata assessed amount is less than $300.

Frequently asked questions

1.  Will I receive the one-off payment?

Payment is generally limited to employees on NSW Health payroll – this excludes staff who are employed by external agencies.

2. I work part time/ reduced hours. Will I receive the full payment?

Eligible part-time and casual employees will receive one total payment being a pro rata amount, including superannuation; calculated on the average ordinary time hours worked over the last 12 months (subject to a minimum threshold payment).

Eligible part-time or casual staff, and staff that have taken a period of unpaid leave will receive a minimum payment of $300, which includes superannuation and is subject to income tax; if their pro rata assessed amount is less than $300.

3. I am a casual employee. Will I receive the full payment?

Casual staff who have an active assignment as of 1 July 2022 and have worked prior to 1 April 2022 will be eligible for the payment on a pro-rata basis.

4. Will I receive the payment if I am on paid leave?

Yes, any paid leave does not impact on eligibility.

5. Will I receive the payment if I am on or have taken unpaid leave?

You must have worked during the 2021-22 Financial Year; and you must have received a payment for this work after 1 April 2022.

6. I recently left NSW Health after a long period of employment and worked through the pandemic. Will I receive the payment?

You must have been employed on or before 1 April 2022; and remain employed on or after 1 July 2022 to be eligible.

7.  Are temporary employees, including locums, eligible to receive the payment?

Locums or other temporary employees paid via NSW Health payroll are eligible to receive the payment; subject to the engagement commencing on or before 1 April 2022; and remaining in place on or after 1 July 2022.

You must have worked during the 2021-22 Financial Year; and you must have received a payment for this work after 1 April 2022.

8.  I work for a third schedule facility/ hospital, am I eligible?

You are eligible if:

  1. you are an employee of an organisation listed in Column 1 of Schedule 3 of the Health Services Act 1997 (NSW); and
  2. you work in a ‘recognised establishment’ or provide a ‘recognised service’ listed in Column 2 of Schedule 3 of the Health Services Act 1997 (NSW).

9. I am employed by an agency to work for NSW Health. Will I receive the payment?

Unfortunately not, unless you are paid via NSW Health payroll. While your service during COVID was important and appreciated, the payment is limited to those meeting eligibility criteria as described earlier above.

10. I work in multiple roles across different Health agencies, how many payments can I expect?

Where eligible, employees will receive one total payment only (maximum of $3000 inclusive of superannuation); regardless of how many roles they occupy.

11.  I am eligible, when can I expect to receive the payment?

The exact timing is yet to be confirmed but is anticipated to be during July-August 2022.

12. What account will it be paid into? Can I nominate a different account?

Payment will be made to the account that your pay usually goes into; and you are unable to nominate an alternative account for the payment.

13. Will the payment be taxed?

Yes.

14. The payment will put me in a higher tax bracket, can I elect to have the payment broken up into smaller amounts?

Unfortunately not. The payment is a one-off lump sum payment.

15. Will the payment be added to my base salary?

No, the payment is a one-off payment.

16. Will the payment include Superannuation?

Superannuation is included in the $3000 payment.
