On 11 March the Federal Government announced a support package for the tourism and aviation sectors. We immediately wrote to Emirates Airlines seeking information about the impact this would have on its workforce, including commitments around rostering, stand downs and redundancies.
Emirates wrote back to us on Friday, 12 March 2021. Emirates will continue to receive no support from the Australian government. The supports for international aviation are limited to Qantas and Virgin.
The Federal Government’s ‘support’ package for aviation is a complete failure for workers at Emirates. You and your colleagues deserve to be supported to stay in the industry until flying returns to normal.
The Company was excluded from receiving benefits – including JobKeeper – from the Australian Government to help you through the current crisis.
The latest package announced only benefits domestic airlines that operate to a limited number of destinations within Australia.
Due to the current crisis, Emirates has had to restructure their Australian operation and believes the global airline will return to fly as a mid-tier carrier when capped arrivals to Australia are forecast to end in October 2021.
