What a great time to be a member of the mighty United Services Union!
Time has raced since our last edition but if you take a read of our latest edition you will see we have been working hard right across the union.
I cannot go past the recent announcement by Premier Minns to fund $252 million to establish 1,300 local government apprenticeships/traineeships.
What a great outcome for NSW local government, spearheaded by the USU. Graeme has been so passionate about trainees and apprenticeships for so many years, campaigning tirelessly for this funding which secures local government into the future. I am proud to be part of this achievement.
The USU has always supported apprentices and those who mentor them and in recent years I have had the honour of presenting our New Gen Awards to outstanding apprentices and mentors.
Talking to them makes me realise the difference this funding will make, not only to the individuals who get access to these positions, but to local communities right across NSW where local government is the heartbeat.
Being part of something that makes this much difference warms my heart in this rather chilly Bathurst winter!
We have also been busy across our other industries and I urge you to have a read through our journal. I would especially like to direct members to our story on Escabags – the USU entered a partnership with ESCABAGS in 2023 to support survivors of domestic violence. We’re asking you to get involved by donating supplies for those in need.
I know times are tough for many at the moment but for those escaping domestic violence times are even harder, so a small item to help out would be greatly appreciated. Find out how you can help here.
Speaking of tough times I was devastated to hear about Rex Airlines going into Administration this week. To our many members working for Rex I send my support. The union will now be working with the administrator to try to ensure our members’ entitlements are protected and to save as many jobs as possible,
