As soon as they heard of the USU’s donation drive for domestic violence charity Escabags, Wollongong City Council delegates leapt into action.

Narelle Constable and Max Dawson, who are also proud members of our Women’s Committee, want as many donations as possible. Which means spreading the word, encouraging and make it easy for their colleagues to donate.

Which is where the brown paper bag comes in. Convenient and easier to carry than boxes, Max and Narelle glued donation drive flyers to bags and then distributed them around council worksites.

Their efforts quickly paid off – within a day, those brown paper bags were being returned filled with items. A few weeks later, donations are still coming through.

Max says ‘The donation drive is important to me as I saw first-hand, earlier this year with the USU Women’s committee, the efforts that go into making the Escabags. I just can’t believe the amount of women and children (and sometimes men) that need these bags and I feel privileged to be able to contribute in some small way to this great charity’.

The Escabags donation drive is a joint effort of our Women’s committee and Sustainability committee. Find out more about the donation drive and our work with Escabags here.

Escabags is an Illawarra based charity run by domestic abuse survivor Stacy Jane. Escape bags are free tote bags filled with the necessities a victim of abuse may need when initially escaping a dangerous or abusive situation. The bags are available across the country at hundreds of collection points which are listed on the Escabags website here.
