Recently the United Services Union decided to form a Vocational Group that would look at matters, industry standards and concerns of staff and members that are employed in the field of “Weeds and Bio-Security Officers”.

This includes but is not limited to Weeds Officers, Biosecurity, Weeds Spraying, Bush Regeneration and Bush Care. The USU asked Local Organiser Damien Welsh from the Mid North Coast to nominate delegates or to seek nominations from those that would be interested in joining the group.

The response has been excellent so far from all areas. The coordinator of the group has spoken with several members from different areas including specialist from LLS, Weeds Authorities from across the State and Council representatives.  If you are interested in joining the group, please feel free to call or email the coordinator directly.

The Vocational Group will look at and discuss issues around the industry, current Position Descriptions and qualifications needed as part of the “Biosecurity Act” and that which is required by the “DPI” from across NSW to see if it is possible to “standardise” Position Descriptions for all Councils and Weeds Authorities, and bring regular industrial updates and information out to all members and staff who work in this industry and field, with the prospect of delivering specialised knowledge and information to enhance, promote and build Union strength in the area of “Weeds and Bio-Security Officers”.

If you have any questions, concerns, or ideas that you would like the group to talk about, from “how you do it” to “what could make my job easier” all you need to do is get this information or question to your local delegate, organiser, or the coordinator of the group.

Once the group has been finalised an update will be sent out with the group’s details and upcoming meeting dates.
