The USU has swiftly acted to prevent the Council’s initial attempts to outsource jobs and services at the Laycock Street Theatre.

On the eve of the Council’s “caretaker” period, USU members and representatives were shocked to receive an email stating:

“The Council is now actioning a contracted service for all future ticketing and marketing services through Central Coast Arts Ltd (Art House Wyong).”

The USU immediately sought clarity and prepared for proceedings before the New South Wales Industrial Commission. The Council has since repeatedly stated in correspondence that the outsourcing would not proceed, that it is on hold, and that further consultation is required.

However, despite multiple USU requests, Central Coast Council and the CEO have not ruled out the possibility of outsourcing these jobs and services in the future.

While these developments are positive, the USU remains very concerned that the Central Coast Council still intends to pursue an agenda of outsourcing jobs and services.

Councils often aim to privatise services to save money, typically by allowing contractors to place our members on inferior awards with lower pay rates, leading to a “race to the bottom.”

The USU will always oppose the privatisation of Council services because it results in workers being made redundant or placed on inferior rates of pay, jeopardises the safe delivery of services, and prices vulnerable community members out of the market through fee increases to maximise profit.

The USU encourages all members to remain vigilant. If you have any concerns, please contact your USU representative immediately.
