DAY ONE: Empowerment and Mental Health

The first day emphasized mental health and included a visit by puppies from the Blacktown Animal Rehoming Centre (BARC), bringing joy to all attendees. The conference featured a poignant presentation by State MP Anna Watson, who addressed the challenges faced by women and families escaping domestic violence. Federal MP Michelle Rowlands also provided updates on federal initiatives supporting female workers.

DAY TWO: Informative Sessions and Legislative Advances

Among the conference highlights was a comprehensive study on menopause by Dr. Sharmila Kumar, exploring its impact on both private and professional lives. Following this, USU Industrial Officers Tameeka Stewert and Claudia Marrone presented on reproductive leave, which includes provisions for menstruation, menopause, health checks (such as prostate and breast screenings), IVF treatment, and transition leave. A significant motion was passed at the conference, advocating for reproductive leave to be included in all future agreements and awards negotiated by the USU.

“I would like to take this opportunity to thank you personally for organising and executing such an incredible event. I was so nervous coming down by myself to a Women’s Conference where I didn’t know anyone or what to expect. My nerves were quickly put at ease when I arrived at the conference centre on the Sunday morning and the energy in the room was electric and calming at the same time.

Every speaker was amazing and every topic was relevant to us and celebrating what the union has done for so many people over the years. I was permeated with one of the strongest senses of pride I have ever felt. I left the Women’s Conference feeling empowered beyond words and with the stark reminder that I have a voice and I have a right to use it for good!

I’ve walked away with so many new friends, so much knowledge and feeling every emotion I think possible!”
