The USU is proud to share a major step forward for USU members and the community following a strong recommendation issued from the New South Wales Industrial Relations Commission (IRC) regarding the Council Resolution 2025/160, a perceived backdoor proposal by Coffs Harbour City Council to outsource its Beach Lifeguard Services without proper consultation or notification to affected USU members.

Thanks to the powerful advocacy of the USU, the IRC has issued the following recommendations:

  • The General Manager is recommended to report to the elected Council to rescind Resolution 2025/160.
  • The Council mustcease all discussions about implementing the resolution until at least 14 August 2025, when the matter will be formally heard again before the NSW IRC.
  • Council mustdisclose all relevant documents, including the previously “confidential” report, to the USU.
  • Council officers mustengage directly with the USU and its members to resolve any operational concerns around Beach Lifeguard Services.
  • The matter will be heard before the NSW IRC at10:30am on 14 August 2025

What This Means

This outcome is a clear demonstration of the strength of union membership. It reinforces the importance of transparency, consultation, and respect for the vital role our Beach Lifeguards play in delivering essential community services.
