Ensuring fair, decent, and accurate pay is a cornerstone of workplace satisfaction, value and importantly, compliance with the Award.
For USU members employed under the NSW 2023 Local Government (State) Award, understanding your entitlements is essential to confirming that you are being paid correctly.
The Award outlines specific provisions that direct wages, allowances, and employment conditions for local government employees. Clause 8 of the Award emphasises and states that employees must be paid in accordance with the rates prescribed in the relevant salary system.
The USU has recently been contacted on concerns that USU members were not being paid the appropriate salary system rate due to not allegedly holding an “essential criteria” item. The Council must pay the appropriate value and salary system rate for the duties being undertaken by the worker.
Clause 8 also details the salary system, including the structure of salary bands and salary progression criteria. USU Members should verify that their salary system rates align with the duties they perform and that they are progressing through the salary steps as outlined. If you believe your salary system rate does not reflect your responsibilities, you may be entitled to a re-evaluation or retrospective payment.
Any additional or higher-grade duties should also be paid in accordance with Clause 12.
Additionally, Clause 15 addresses allowances, including travel, meal, and tool allowances. These are designed to compensate USU members for the costs incurred in the course of their duties. Ensuring that these allowances are correctly applied can significantly impact your overall remuneration.
If you suspect discrepancies in your pay or entitlements, it is always advisable to consult your local union representative. The USU is committed to supporting members in resolving pay issues and ensuring compliance with the Award.
